What Length Shorts Cover the Awrah? A Practical Guide for Muslim Men

The short answer: for men, the awrah is the area from the navel to the knee. So shorts need to cover the knee, and keep covering it when you move. On most adult men that means an inseam of about 13 to 15 inches, in fabric thick enough not to go see-through when it stretches.

The standard men's athletic short is built at 7 inches. That is not a small gap. It is half the length you need.

The Rule, Plainly

Cover from the navel to the knee. Keep it loose enough that it does not trace the shape of what is underneath, and opaque enough that nothing shows through. That is the whole standard, and every school of thought lands in the same practical place: if the short covers your knee and stays there, you are fine.

The only real disagreement among scholars is whether the knee itself counts as part of the awrah or just the boundary. It is a narrow question and it does not change what you buy, because a short that clears the knee satisfies both readings. If you want a ruling for your own situation, ask your local imam or a scholar you trust. This is a shopping guide, not a fatwa.

Coverage Is Three Things, Not One

Length. Measured as inseam, from the crotch seam down to the hem. This is the number brands publish, and the one that matters most.

Opacity. Fabric that looks solid on the rack can go sheer once it is stretched across a thigh or soaked with sweat. Fabric weight in GSM is the honest signal. Below roughly 160 GSM most polyester knits turn translucent under stretch. At 180 to 200 GSM they hold.

Staying put. A short that measures 14 inches on the hanger but climbs to mid-thigh in a squat is a 9-inch short in practice. Coverage that fails when you move is not coverage.

What Inseam Do You Actually Need?

Where the hem lands depends on your height, so there is no single right number. Measured standing:

Height Inseam to reach the knee Inseam to sit below the knee
5'6" (168 cm) ~11.5 in 13 to 14 in
5'9" (175 cm) ~12.5 in 14 to 15 in
6'0" (183 cm) ~13.5 in 15 to 16 in
6'3" (191 cm) ~14.5 in 16 to 17 in

Aim for the right-hand column, not the middle one. Clothing rides up when you move, and that extra margin is the difference between being covered in a squat and only being covered while standing still.

The Four-Position Test

Check the pair you already own. Stand in front of a mirror and run through these:

  1. Standing. Hem at or below the knee.
  2. Full squat. Hem still at or below the knee, not riding to mid-thigh.
  3. Ruku and sujood. Coverage holds from every angle, including from behind while bowing.
  4. Seated, knees apart. Fabric does not pull tight and go translucent across the thigh.

Then check opacity: stretch the fabric over your hand under a bright light or your phone torch. If you can read your skin tone through it, it is too thin. If you are buying for swimming, do this test wet, because most fabric gets more translucent when it is soaked.

If the short fails positions two, three, or four, it is not doing the job, no matter how it looks standing still.

Where the Fitra Core Short Lands

We built the Core Short around this exact problem. 14-inch inseam, which sits below the knee for most men between 5'6" and 6'0". 85% polyester / 15% spandex interlock knit at 190 GSM, opaque under stretch. A diamond gusset at the crotch seam so the hem does not get dragged upward in deep movement. Zipped side pockets, 7 inches deep.

Every pair has to pass a full squat, a lateral lunge, and a kneeling position with the hem still below the knee before it ships. That is the whole standard.

The Core Short is $50 at fitra.fit.

Common Questions

Are 3/4 shorts enough? Yes. Three-quarter shorts sit below the knee or at mid-calf by definition, so length is not the issue. Check the opacity and the looseness separately.

Do basketball shorts work? Usually not. Most run 9 to 11 inches, which is above the knee on most men and well above it once you move. A few models with sewn-in tights get there. More on that here.

Can I just wear leggings or compression tights? They cover the skin, but clothing is also meant to not cling so tightly that it outlines the shape underneath, which is exactly what compression fabric is designed to do. Worn under a loose short that reaches the knee, nobody argues with it. On their own, plenty of people do.

What about swimming? Same length rule. Opacity matters more, because wet fabric is thinner fabric. Test it wet.

Where do I actually buy these? The category is small but no longer empty. We compared the options, including other brands, in our guide to the best shorts for Muslim men.
