The Shorts I Wore For 5 Years

I've played basketball for over 15 years. Pickup runs, leagues, late-night gym sessions, the whole life. And for most of that time, I had one pair of shorts.

Not by choice at first. By elimination. They were the only pair I ever found that actually covered my knees, stayed put when I moved, and didn't look like a costume. I wore them for five straight years. Washed them hundreds of times. Played in them until the fabric finally gave out mid-season and ripped beyond saving.

So I went shopping for a replacement. Simple, right?

It wasn't. Everything on the shelf had gotten shorter. The 5-inch inseam took over, and if you wanted real coverage, your options were basketball shorts from 2003 or swim trunks pretending to be activewear. The premium stuff looked great and rode up the second I started sprinting. The long stuff fit like a trash bag. After months of searching, I accepted the truth: the shorts I needed didn't exist anymore.

So I made them.

Why I cover my knees

For me, covering my knees is a bit of a style preference, but it's also how I practice my faith, on and off the court. For 15 years, the athletic wear industry quietly told me I had to choose: dress how the game dresses, or sit out.

I never accepted that. I know I'm not alone. There are millions of athletes, Muslim and not, who simply want longer athletic shorts. Some for faith. Some for modesty. Some because they're tall and a 7-inch inseam looks like a joke. Some because they just don't want their thighs out at the gym.

That's the gap Fitra exists to close.

What we actually built

Once I committed to making the shorts myself, I got obsessive about the details:

  • 14-inch inseam. Long enough to cover the knee on most builds. Cut so it never looks baggy or dated.

  • 190 GSM fabric. Heavy enough to hold its shape and drape clean. Light enough to breathe through a full run.

  • 4-way stretch. The short moves with your sprint, your squat, your jump shot. It doesn't fight you, and it doesn't ride up.

  • Tested in real games. Not a fit model standing still in a studio. Actual full-speed basketball, lifting, and sprint work.

Why Fitra?

Fitra is an Arabic word meaning your natural state. The way you were made before anything got in the way.

That's the whole brand in one word. When your gear disappears, what's left is just you, moving the way you were built to move. Performance, by nature.

Who Fitra is For?

Fitra makes modest activewear for men who want modest coverage without sacrificing performance. Hoopers. Lifters. Runners. Muslim athletes who cover for faith.

We're a small brand out of Metro Detroit with a simple promise: every detail earns its place, or it gets cut.

You May Be Wondering

Do Fitra shorts cover the knees?

Yes. Fitra shorts are built with a 14-inch inseam designed to cover the knee on most builds. They're made for athletes who want knee-length coverage during basketball, lifting, running, and training.

Are Fitra shorts good for Muslim athletes?

Yes. Fitra was founded by a Muslim athlete and designed around awrah coverage from the navel to below the knee, without compromising athletic performance. They work for anyone seeking modest activewear, regardless of faith.

Will the shorts ride up during sprints or lifts?

No. The 190 GSM fabric and 4-way stretch construction were specifically engineered and game-tested to stay in place during full-speed movement.

What inseam length are Fitra shorts?

14 inches, measured to sit at or below the knee on most heights. If you're between sizes or especially tall, check our size guide for fit notes.
