How to Find Athletic Shorts That Don't Ride Up

Athletic shorts that ride up mid-workout are one of the most common and frustrating problems in men's training gear. Why Shorts Ride Up During Exercise

There are three main causes and most shorts fail on all three.

Inseam is too short. The standard 7-inch inseam has no fabric reserve for dynamic movement. When your thighs spread in a squat or lunge, the fabric gets pulled toward the center of the body and rides up. The only solution is more fabric, which means a longer inseam.

No gusset. The crotch seam is the point of maximum stress in any leg movement. Without a diamond or U-shaped gusset panel, that seam pulls tight under load, dragging the legs of the short upward. A proper athletic gusset creates slack at the right point so the fabric moves with you instead of against you.

Wrong fabric construction. Lightweight or loosely knit fabrics shift easily and do not recover their shape under repeated movement. An interlock knit with spandex content has the dimensional stability to stay where it is placed on the body, rather than migrating upward with movement.

What to Look For

If you are shopping for shorts that genuinely stay in place, these are the non-negotiable criteria.
